Abstract

These notes toward a contemporary novel follow a young girl's search for identity in a very unique environment --the boarding school. Readers accompany the protagonist, Molly Danneker, on her four year journey through "prep" school as she questions her religious, political, and moral beliefs in a setting where respect for tradition often clashes with the desire for modernity. Told from a first-person perspective, this work of fiction offers social commentary on boarding schools as an institution, the psychology of female adolescents, and the means of self-discovery.
