Abstract

Anti Tom novels comprise a seldom-studied body of literature that responded directly to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin and devised arguments to defend the system of slavery. This study undertakes the explication of the arguments of several of these novels, which center of two related ideologies: masculine responsibility and the economy of sympathy.
