Peer-Review Process

In the summer of 2016, the journal underwent a strategic planning process. Editors, Reviewers, and Copy Editors came together and affirmed that the primary purpose of the journal is to provide a professional community of practice for its members. Because of this, we are proud to say we value our time reviewing, critiquing, and responding to author submissions through our collaborative, cohort-style peer-review process.

After your submission is received, your work undergoes a unique peer-review process. It is a cohort-based exercise wherein each submission is double-blind reviewed by 2–3 graduate students with a range of experiences, disciplines, and areas of focus. Additionally, each cohort of reviewers is led by a Lead Reviewer. Each cohort member reads, scores, and provides commentary on each submission independently, and then meets to discuss their responses and make a collective decision regarding your manuscript. Your Lead Reviewer will then compile a detailed letter outlining any potential needed revisions and a decision regarding your manuscript. Depending upon your decision, your submission will proceed accordingly as outlined in our Manuscript Cycle Visual.

Your submission will receive one of four decisions: (1) accept, (2) accept with minor revisions, (3) major revisions recommended, or (4) reject. If we find that your work is not a fit for our journal's mission or intended audiences, it will be rejected and returned to you with a decision letter. If your submission needs major revisions, it will be returned to you with a decision letter including detailed suggestions for revisions. You will have 21 days to revise and resubmit your work, at which time it proceeds through a re-review process similar to its original review. If your submission is accepted with minor revisions, it will be returned to you with a decision letter including detailed suggestions for revisions. You will have 14 days to revise and resubmit your work, at which time it will be re-reviewed by the Lead Reviewer who originally reviewed your submission to determine if your manuscript needs additional revisions or is ready for acceptance.

Upon acceptance, our Production Editor will be in communication with you to confirm edits, offer you a proof, and secure a copyright permission form.
