Abstract

Constantijn Huygens's 1627 portrait by Thomas de Keyser has traditionally been viewed as an image of the public man. This paper seeks to point out that the image contains distinct personal associations as well. Particular attention is given to the circumstances under which the commission was granted as well as Huygens's poetry on the portrait and in general.
