Abstract

This paper investigates the performance of several fuels on novel palladium based electro-catalysts, including sodium-formate, ammonium-formate, and potassium-formate, and ethanol and isopropyl alcohol. Comparisons were done through the use of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA). Results adjusted for surface area showed that potassium formate and ethanol performed the best. Of these, potassium formate showed the strongest overall performance when accounting for parametric differences.

Cover Page Note

This study was completed as part of an undergraduate research class in the Spring of 2011 at Towson University, led by Dr. John Haan. The entire premise of this paper is credited to his previous research. The method for preparing the catalysts and running experiments are his developments. This publication would not be possible without the scientific contributions of my research partners Joseph Blizzard, Loan Dinh, and Lauren Kasmir. Gratitude is also due to the Honors College for soliciting undergraduate work and for encouraging the submission of this paper. I would like to personally thank my fiancé for her constant encouragement and unwavering support, and my parents for the opportunities a college education has given me.
